Vox in Rama

Anna Semple(b. 1997)

About the work

‘Vox in Rama is a wonderfully evocative text, full of grief and visceral outpouring. I wanted to capture something of this in my setting, setting the words as if they are outcries from Rachel herself, wild and guttural. Surrounding these exclamations is a haze of solo voices, passing around softer murmurings. I was interested in using the difference in timbre of human voices as a way of exploring the text’s very human focus - the phrases appear and reappear in different voice parts, introducing subtle changes in colour.’

Words

Vox in Rama audita est
ploratus et ululatus [multus],
Rachel plorans filios suos,
[et] noluit consolari, quia non sunt.

A voice is heard in Ramah
of weeping and [great] lamentation.
Rachel is weeping for her children,
and will not be comforted because they are no more.

Matthew 2:18 (citing Jeremiah 31:15)
